Ecosense Sustainable Solutions has successfully installed a Thermal Energy Storage System in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT), Gorakhpur. The installation strengthens the department’s experimental capabilities in thermal engineering, energy storage, and renewable energy research.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at MMMUT has a strong focus on thermal engineering and research, with programmes including M.Tech. in Energy Technology and Management and Ph.D. research in Mechanical Engineering.

About the Thermal Energy Storage System

The Thermal Energy Storage System is a modular experimental platform developed for studying latent heat thermal energy storage using Phase Change Materials (PCMs). It provides a controlled environment for investigating the charging, storage, and discharging behaviour of thermal energy.

The system uses a heat transfer fluid (HTF) to transfer thermal energy between the heat source and PCM storage units. As the PCM undergoes a solid-to-liquid phase transition, thermal energy is stored as latent heat. During discharge, the stored thermal energy is released as the PCM solidifies

Experimental Capabilities

The system provides a platform for students and researchers to investigate several aspects of thermal energy storage, including:

  • Thermal characteristics and phase-change behaviour of PCMs
  • Charging and discharging characteristics
  • Heat transfer between HTF and PCM
  • Effect of HTF flow rate on thermal performance
  • Effect of inlet temperature on charging behaviour
  • Comparative analysis of different PCMs
  • Single and cascaded PCM configurations
  • Thermal storage efficiency and energy utilisation
  • Temperature distribution during charging and discharging cycles

The system incorporates multiple temperature measurement points and flow measurement, allowing experimental parameters to be monitored during different operating conditions. Data can also be logged and exported for further analysis.

Dual PCM Configuration for Comparative Studies

A key feature of the system is its ability to accommodate two different Phase Change Materials, allowing researchers to compare their thermal behaviour under controlled conditions.

The system supports single as well as cascaded PCM operation, enabling experiments involving different melting temperature ranges and sequential thermal storage.

This configuration can be particularly useful for studying how the selection and arrangement of storage materials influence thermal response, charging time, and overall storage performance.

Data Monitoring and Experimental Analysis

The Thermal Energy Storage System provides real-time monitoring of important experimental parameters through integrated sensors and a digital interface.

Temperature measurements at multiple locations help researchers observe the progression of thermal energy through the storage system, while flow measurement enables investigation of the relationship between HTF flow conditions and heat transfer performance.

Experimental data can be recorded and exported for generating graphs, comparing operating conditions, and documenting research results.

Supporting Thermal Energy Storage Research

The installation at MMMUT adds an advanced experimental platform to the department's broader thermal and energy engineering infrastructure. The department already maintains laboratories covering areas such as Heat Transfer, Fluid Machinery, Thermodynamics, Energy Conversion Systems, and Solar Energy.

The Thermal Energy Storage System can complement these areas by providing hands-on experimental capabilities for investigating modern thermal energy storage technologies and their integration with renewable energy systems.
