Enabling Advanced AEM Electrolyzer Research at IIT Delhi

Ecosense supplied an AEM Electrolyzer Characterization System to the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi, supporting advanced research and experimental studies in hydrogen production and electrochemical energy systems.

The system is designed as a flexible research platform for studying AEM electrolyzer performance under different operating conditions and understanding how key operating parameters influence hydrogen generation, efficiency, electrical characteristics, thermal behavior, and overall electrolyzer performance.

A Flexible Platform for Electrolyzer Research

The characterization system provides researchers with an integrated environment to investigate the behavior of AEM electrolyzer cells and stacks. Multiple cells can be individually addressed or operated together, allowing experiments to be performed at different levels of the electrolyzer configuration.

This flexibility enables researchers to study the effect of variables such as:

  • Electrolyte temperature
  • Electrolyte circulation
  • Electrical operating conditions
  • Current and voltage
  • Gas flow and pressure
  • Cell temperature
  • Number of cells in operation
  • Hydrogen and oxygen production
  • Operating and thermal conditions

These variables can be studied individually or in combination to understand their influence on electrolyzer performance.

Research and Characterization Capabilities

The system can support a range of experimental investigations related to AEM electrolyzer development, including:

Electrochemical Characterization

Researchers can perform current-voltage characterization of individual cells and stacks to study polarization behavior, operating regions, and electrochemical performance. The system supports controlled electrical operation and experimental data logging for detailed analysis.

Effect of Operating Conditions

The integrated electrolyte circulation and heating arrangement allows researchers to investigate how temperature and electrolyte operating conditions affect electrolyzer behavior and hydrogen production.

Stack-Level Studies

The system can be configured for operation with individual cells as well as multiple cells, making it suitable for investigating the transition from individual-cell behavior to stack-level performance.

Hydrogen Production Studies

Hydrogen generation can be monitored together with gas flow and pressure parameters, allowing researchers to correlate operating conditions with hydrogen production performance.

Thermal Management Studies

Individual cell temperature monitoring combined with controlled electrolyte heating and circulation provides a platform for studying thermal behavior and temperature-related performance variations.

AEM Technology Research

The system can be used for research into AEM electrolysis, including electrochemical kinetics, overpotential, mass-transport effects, stack engineering, and comparison of AEM and other electrolyzer technologies.

Integrated Data Acquisition and Control

A key feature of the system is its integrated instrumentation and software environment. Electrical, thermal, electrolyte, and gas-side parameters can be monitored and logged during experiments.

The software provides visualization of experimental parameters, controls key operating functions, and enables recorded data to be exported for further analysis. This allows researchers to develop repeatable experiments and compare the impact of different operating conditions

Designed for Advanced Hydrogen Research

The AEM Electrolyzer Characterization System provides IIT Delhi researchers with a dedicated experimental platform for investigating the relationship between electrical operation, thermal conditions, electrolyte behavior, gas production, and electrolyzer performance.

Its combination of configurable cell operation, controlled operating conditions, integrated instrumentation, data acquisition, and safety features makes it suitable for both fundamental studies and advanced research into next-generation hydrogen production technologies.
