VERIFICATION OF STRESS HYPOTHESIS – ECS234

This apparatus is designed to generate multi-axial loads on test samples made of ductile metals such as steel, copper, brass, and aluminium. It is used for verification of the Rankine and Tresca yield criteria and representation of stresses and strains in Mohr’s circle.

Key Features

  • Multi-Axial Loading System:
The apparatus is designed to generate multi-axial loads on ductile metal specimens such as steel, copper, brass, and aluminium. These loads can be applied individually or in combination, allowing the study of pure bending, pure torsion, and combined bending and twisting moments.

  • Accurate Load Generation Mechanism:
Load moments are produced by means of calibrated weights and a lever arm of 100 mm. This setup allows precise control of the applied bending and torsional moments for experimental verification.

  • Shear-Free Loading Design:
The loading arrangement ensures the application of load moments without the influence of shear forces. The compensation mechanism eliminates dead-load effects, ensuring true bending and torsion conditions on the test specimen.

  • Measurement of Deformation:
Deformation is measured at the point of maximum deflection using a high-accuracy dial gauge. The system supports measurement for seven different load combinations of bending and torsion, with deformation ranging from 0 to 10 mm and graduation of 0.1 mm.

  • Interchangeable Test Specimens:
Supplied with four different ductile metal specimens—steel, copper, brass, and aluminium—enabling comparative analysis of material behavior under identical loading conditions.

  • Verification of Yield Criteria:
The setup is designed for the verification of Rankine and Tresca yield criteria, facilitating the determination of yield points under different loading combinations.

  • Graphical Representation:
Experimental results can be represented in the form of Mohr’s Circle for stresses and strains, allowing graphical analysis and better understanding of multi-axial stress conditions.

  • Component Storage System:
The apparatus is provided with a dedicated storage system to safely store weights, specimens, and accessories, ensuring organized and convenient laboratory use.
