The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is a premier institute of science and technology established in 2008. IITH has been consistently ranked in the top 10 institutes in India for Engineering according to NIRF making it one of the most coveted schools for science and technology in the country. NMICPS TiHAN is India’s first Autonomous Navigation Testbed (Aerial & terrestrials) facility, TiHAN was inaugurated by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State for Science and Technology & Earth Sciences at IIT Hyderabad on 4th July, 2022.

Ecosense developed and installed an Artificial Wind Generator at NMICPS TiHAN, IIT Hyderabad for their UAV testing facility.

Ecosense’s Artificial Wind Generator

Our Artificial Wind Generator is a sophisticated testing apparatus designed for evaluating wind turbines and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The system employs fan blades affixed to an induction motor, and its speed is precisely regulated by a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). The VFD seamlessly interfaces with a LabVIEW application through RS485 communication, allowing for real-time control over wind speeds ranging from 0 to 20 meters per second. This collaborative synergy between hardware and software ensures a dynamic and adaptable testing environment. The LabVIEW interface not only facilitates user-friendly monitoring but also provides a platform for data collection and analysis. Safety features, including emergency stop mechanisms and interlocks, are integrated to manage unforeseen circumstances during testing. The system's accurate calibration, coupled with the potential for remote operation, makes it an ideal tool for researchers and engineers seeking to explore the intricacies of aerodynamics and optimize the performance of wind-driven technologies.

Technical Advantages of Artificial Wind Generator

• Precise Control: The Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) allows for accurate and dynamic regulation of wind speeds, enabling precise control over the testing environment.
• Wide Speed Range: The system covers a broad wind speed range from 0 to 20 meters per second, providing flexibility to simulate various real-world conditions for comprehensive testing.
• Remote Operation: The RS485 communication enables remote monitoring and control, allowing users to interact with the system from a distance, enhancing convenience and accessibility.
• Safety Features: Integrated safety mechanisms, such as emergency stop buttons and interlocks, ensure a secure testing environment, mitigating risks during experimentation.
• User-Friendly Interface: The LabVIEW application offers an intuitive and user-friendly interface for real-time monitoring, data visualization, and seamless interaction with the Artificial Wind Generator.
• Data Logging Capabilities: The system includes robust data logging functionality, allowing for the recording and analysis of critical parameters during testing sessions, facilitating thorough performance evaluations.
